Edith and Otto Sommerich exhibition materials
Materials intended for display in an exhibition celebrating Edith Wise Sommerich and Otto Sommerich. Edith was a longtime New School student, founding member and chair of the New School Associates, and, with Otto, a major donor to the school. The records consist of biographical documentation, correspondence related to Associates events, and a letter from President Emeritus Alvin Johnson.
Henry H. Arnhold memory book
A compilation of notes, correspondence, and photographs depicting philanthropist Henry Arnhold’s involvement with and contributions to The New School over the course of almost eight decades. This book was created by the New School Development Office on the occasion of Arnhold’s death in 2018.
New School Associates event recordings
The New School Associates was the first fund raising body associated with the New School for Social Research. Comprised of faculty, former students, school administrators and supporters of the school's aims, the Associates sponsored educational and social events and an annual membership drive. The audio recordings in this collection represent a small number of numerous events sponsored or co-sponsored by the Associates, mostly dating from the 1960s and 1970s.
New School Associates records
The New School Associates was the first fundraising body associated with the New School for Social Research. Composed of faculty, former students, school administrators and supporters of the school’s aims, the Associates sponsored numerous events and an annual membership drive. These records represent the administration of the Associates from the mid-1940s through the 1970s. Art exhibition records extend into the 1980s.
New School Development and Public Relations Office records
The collection consists of records originating from the office of Mary Urban, who coordinated fundraising and public relations efforts at the New School in the 1940s and early 1950s, and that of her successor, Margarete Westmann, director of Development from 1958-1962. Materials include memoranda and correspondence, financial statements, budgets, advertising contracts, donor and prospect records, and New School Associates membership records.
Also includes event planning materials and invitations, fundraising appeals, minutes, reports, promotional materials, and records documenting the work of the Scholarship Committee and the Graduate Faculty Alumni Association. New School press release collection
This collection contains press releases issued by The New School (formerly, the New School for Social Research) over a three-decade span. The press releases provide a detailed accounting of courses, events, faculty appointments, and the addition of new programs and divisions at the university, including announcements related to Parsons School of Design following its affiliation with The New School in 1970.
New School Publicity Office records
This collection largely documents the activities of the New School Publicity Office during the 1940s and 1950s, and reflects the range of activities of the department under the leadership of Agnes De Lima, who directed the department for two decades. The collection includes notes and draft materials for the production of press releases, articles in the weekly New School Bulletin, advertisements and course promotion, and administrative materials.
Also includes materials related to the organization of art exhibitions and special events, and transcripts of radio announcements and speeches. The Dramatic Workshop, École Libre des Hautes Études and Graduate Faculty series in this collection are especially rich in describing the work of these important New School programs.
