Author of 1965 Columbia University dissertation, Henry James's Criticism: A Re-evaluation. Served as dean of New School College. Member of the Select Committee for the Association of American Colleges, which prepared the report, "Integrity in the College Curriculum" (1985). President of Bennington College.
