Scope and Contents

This is the first of a series of eight Lindeman Lectures in the spring of 1962. The Lindeman Lecture Series was titled, "A Look At American Values." Named for sociologist and philosopher Eduard C. Lindeman, author of The Meaning of Adult Education, the series ran from approximately 1951-1978. The recording begins at minute 00:01:30, with the lecture already in progress. Speaker William L. White was associate director of the American Civil Liberties Union and the author of ten books, including They Were Expendable and Journey for Margaret. He was a noted foreign correspondent during World War II. The question and answer period begins at 21:33, and covers inflation and investment, free market versus state economies, and automation. At approximately minute 35:09, the host of the evening (probably New School President Henry David) sums up the lecture.
