Scope and Contents

This audio recording is of a concert given at The New School by cellist Ellen-Zoe Hassman and pianist Sandra Rivers. The recording quality is poor and sometimes interrupted throughout the performance. The first piece is Ludwig van Beethoven's 3 Fantasiestücke, Op. 73: Zart und mit Ausdruck (1:20), Lebhaft, leicht (3:45), Rasch und mit Feuer (7:03), followed by the Johannes Brahms Cello Sonata No. 1, Op. 38 in E minor: Allegro non Troppo (13:28), Allegretto quasi Menuetto and Trio (23:33), Allegro (29:18).

In the second part of the recording, cellist Ellen-Zoe Hassman is interviewed by New York Times music critic Robert Sherman. The two discuss the difficulties of establishing a career in the classical music business, Hassman's interests, and her experiences as a young musician.

In the third part of the recording, the first piece is Ludwig van Beethoven's Seven Variations on "Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen" for Cello and Piano, WoO 46, followed by Sergei Prokofiev's Cello Sonata in C major, Op. 119: Andante Grave - Moderato Animato (15:09), Moderato - Andante Dolce (26:10), Allegro, ma non troppo (31:37). The finale is David Popper's Hungarian Rhapsody for Cello and Piano, Op. 68 (41:05).
