The book documents Lartigue's life and the lives of the French élite during the first half of the twentieth century. Although already in his seventies, Lartigue was relatively unknown at the time that the book came out; its publication played a key role in launching his international reknown as a photographer. Photographs depicting preparation of the Lartigue book appear in the Personal series of this collection.
