Scope and Contents

The artist Camilo Egas, director of the New School Art Workshops, was in charge of art exhibitions at The New School during the 1950s, but files here show Publicity Office Director Agnes De Lima playing a key role in the enterprise. In addition to producing and disseminating releases, announcements and other promotional materials, she scheduled openings and made arrangements with artists and representatives, down to handling details of transport and installation. There are indications that she sometimes also served as informal agent, reaching out to prospective buyers. Artists represented in exhibitions sometimes, though not always, were instructors or guest lecturers at the New School. Publicity Office reports indicate that De Lima advocated for the creation of a curator position at The New School, someone "who really knows about the art world, gets around to see the artists, and can do some imaginative planning." This position was established in the early 1960s with the founding of the New School Art Center.
