Scope and Contents

Tracyann Williams was interviewed by Anna Robinson-Sweet on February 12, 2020. In the interview, Williams discusses her teaching, advising, and administrative roles in the Bachelor Program for Adults and Transfer Students (BPATS) at The New School from 1998-2020. She starts by explaining how she began teaching a course on women’s history at The New School while still working on her PhD in English literature at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center. Williams talks about becoming core faculty in the BPATS program, which came with increasing administrative responsibilities. In 2010, she recounts how tenure became available to faculty in her division, and she was compelled as a full-time faculty member to apply for tenure despite not having completed her PhD. This led to her firing and re-hiring in a newly created position as director of academic advising for BPATS. Williams discusses how her students organized to keep her at The New School and the stress of starting a new administrative position. She talks about how advising changed in BPATS under her leadership, and the students she worked with. Williams also served as a faculty advisor for the groups Students of the African Diaspora and the Black Student Union. She reflects on her experience as a Black woman in the faculty and administration of The New School. At the end of the interview, Williams discusses her decision to leave the university for a new position as assistant dean of student support and success at Fordham University in the winter of 2020.
