This videorecording documents a session of the New York Comics and Picture Story Symposium presented by author and critic Michael Hearn, who gives an overview of children's book illustration in pre-Soviet Russia and its development under Communism into an instrument of Communist Party propaganda. Hearn presents the work of various Russian children's illustrators and his own analysis. Hearn answers questions from the audience in the latter part of the recording.
