Scope and Contents

The Eyes of the Masters was a series of master classes given as part of the spring semester curriculum of the Jazz and Contemporary Music program at The New School beginning in 1989. Although the Jazz program's core curriculum included master classes given by regular faculty and guest artists since its inception in 1986, Eyes of the Masters was added as an elective and offered master classes with "prominent artists" in the field of jazz and contemporary music, according to The New School course catalogs.

The initial series included 3 sessions, which was expanded to 10 sessions by 2005. Initial guest artists included Victor Bailey, Howard Johnson, Fredrick Waits, Billy Harper, and Don Pullen. By 2015, participating guest artists included Brad Meldhau, Jason Moran, Mark Turner, Butch Morris, Grady Tate, Bill Frisell, Steve Coleman, Randy Weston, Pat Metheny, and Maria Schneider. The Eye of the Masters series continued as an elective within The New School College of Performing Arts Jazz and Contemporary Music program until at least 2018.
