Historical Note

The Graduate School of Management and Urban Professions (GSMUP) was the first school of management at The New School, and the predecessor to the Milano School of International Affairs, Management and Urban Policy, as it is known as of 2017. Created in 1978, GSMUP administered several Master of Arts and Master of Professional Studies programs.

GSMUP's programs were originally administered by the Center for New York City Affairs, which was founded in 1964. When GSMUP launched in 1978, the degree-granting and teaching functions were transferred from the Center to GSMUP, while the Center retained responsibility for a continuing education program in urban affairs and the publication of City Almanac (a bi-monthly publication) and The Fiscal Observer (a bi-weekly publication).

The GSMUP programs transferred from the Center comprised Urban Affairs and Policy Analysis; Human Resources and Manpower Development; Gerontological Services Administration; Health Services Administration; and Tourism and Travel Administration. In addition to these five programs, GSMUP added programs in Fund Raising Management (Summer 1978) and Management Auditing (Spring 1979). The programs offered by GSMUP did not remain static over the years. Some were combined, others were added, and several were dropped, reflecting the evolving research priorities of the School. At the time that the school was rechristened the Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy in 1989, four programs were offered: Urban Affairs and Policy Analysis, Human Resources Management, Health Services Administration and Non-profit Management.

In 1996 university trustee, industrialist and philanthropist Robert J. Milano's name was added to the School. Among other roles, Milano served as vice chair of the Visiting Committee to GSMUP from 1975 to 1983.

In 2011 the school was renamed, "The Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy" following the merger of the Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy with the graduate program in International Affairs, which until then had been a separate entity within the same division as GSMUP. Neither GSMUP nor International Affairs have ever been a part of the Graduate Faculty division of the New School for Social Research. Rather, GSMUP has always been situated within the division known in 2017 as Schools of Public Engagement, or, historically, the New School for General Studies, or, further back, the Adult Division.
