Historical Note
Political Concepts: A Critical Lexicon is an online journal of political theory based at The New School for Social Research. Its first issue was published in 2012. Political Concepts publishes short essays of 5000-10000 words, from a range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences, that aim to critically define a political concept. The journal’s founding editorial statement states:
Each lexical entry will focus on a single concept with the express intention of resituating it in the field of political discourse by addressing what has remained unquestioned or unthought in that concept. Each entry will serve as a short defining essay for a concept. Through their argumentative strategies and employment of the concept in question, entries will aim to reconfigure a concept, rather than take for granted the generally accepted definitions of that concept or the conclusions that follow from them.
Political Concepts was founded by Ann Laura Stoler and Jay Bernstein at The New School for Social Research and Adi Ophir at Brown University. Many prominent contemporary political thinkers feature on the journal’s editorial and advisory board, including Étienne Balibar, Achille Mbembe, Judith Butler, and Steven Lukes. Political Concepts is considered a collaborative research project jointly sponsored by The New School of Social Research at The New School, Brown University, Columbia University, and New York University.
The journal is also responsible for the annual academic graduate student conference of the same name, which also began in 2012 and follows a similar format, accepting papers that aim to define political concepts. In 2018, a selected edited volume of articles from the journal was published under the same name, Political Concepts: A Critical Lexicon.
