Massimo and Lella Vignelli at Parsons, produced by Media Studies program (28:30), 1980 March 22

 File — Box: Mixed pav_1, cassette: Umatic_tape-01_VignelliAtParsons
Scope and Contents

Massimo Vignelli leads New School Media Studies students on a guided tour through a retrospective of his own work, organized at Parsons School of Design. Among the works Vignelli describes include his American flag melting pot; a dinnerware set; a pair of Rotunda chairs; Knoll catalogs; and a number of books and magazines, among them Desert Images (Edward Abbey, David Muench), a collection of writings by Philip Johnson, and the New York City subway book. Vignelli expands in particular on his principles of design as they relate to publication design and typography, calling it a "certain discipline." He also describes a way of crafting "identification without branding," as he discusses package designs developed for Heller, Barneys, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdales. Video quality is very poor, but audio is good.
