The auditorium off the entrance lobby of 66 West Twelfth Street is an elegant, intimate space that seats 550. Circular rings on the domed ceiling, a curve at the back of the stage and at the front of the theater, and a prominent proscenium arch create a sense of unity and enclosure in the space. The library occupied the entire fourth floor. Behind the librarian’s desk in the center of the floor is a triangular wall of shelves formed by staircases on either side leading to the exhibition gallery above. Some time after the building was completed, complaints that noise from the fifth floor distracted those studying in the library, and the stairwells were closed off.
