The poem signed by Hughes (based upon a comparison with examples of Hughes's autograph identified online). Margin notes in pencil are in two distinct handwritings--most are presumably by Enders, with one line change possibly by Hughes--the alterations to the poem were used in Enders's song version. Scope and Contents Various copies of Harvey Enders's composition, Death in Harlem: A Dramatic Song Narrative for Baritone and Orchestra, with lyrics by Langston Hughes. The earliest version is a cover page dated 1939, but the score itself is not present. A manuscript copy contains numerous annotations in pencil and is autographed by Enders. Alvarez. It is unknown if any of the arrangements were ever published.
