The New School Archives And Special Collections

Steven Guarnaccia (1953-) is an American freelance illustrator who served as chair of the Illustration Department at Parsons School of Design from 2004 to 2011, and as associate professor at the school until his retirement in 2021, where he taught courses on experimental children’s books and pictozines. The collection includes office files pertaining to special projects undertaken by the department, works professionally published by former students of the program, student-made posters, and over 300 zines produced by Parsons students.

The collection includes a recording, poster drafts and printed poster promoting a New School student performance of the Ernst Toller play, Hoppla, We're Alive (in the original German, Hoppla, Wir Leben). Students in a Eugene Lang College drama class staged the play in 2019 as part of the events celebrating the university centennial, with the revised title, Fuck, We're Alive.

This collection contains work produced by undergraduate students enrolled in Robert Rabinovitz's courses in the School of Design Strategies at Parsons School of Design. Courses include Product Design, Design and Management, Design Lab, and Technology and Social Interaction, among others. The student work consists largely of published book projects. Also found in this collection are syllabi and other course materials created by Rabinovitz.

Sunbeam "Sunny" Randall (1898-1993) graduated from Parsons School of Design Interior Design Department in 1951 and worked as a professional decorator. The collection includes course materials, furniture and decorative style sketches, class notes, and a scrapbook documenting Randall's art tour of Europe as a Parsons student in 1950.

Suzy Lorraine Ehrlich (1919-2006), was a New York-based fashion illustrator and product designer. The collection is comprised of 69 fashion illustrations executed in pen and ink, pastel, crayon, watercolor, and collage. It also includes two mailers advertising Milliken yarns. Some illustrations may have been executed for a class taught by Jack Potter at the School of Visual Arts.

A leather portfolio embossed with "Sydney Fromkes, 1910-1927" on the front, containing student work from the brief time Fromkes attended the New York School of Fine and Applied Art before his death in 1927 at the age of 17. The portfolio contains theatrical costume drawings, poems, and other writings.

Sylvia Marlowe (1908-1981) was an important mid-twentieth century American harpsichordist. The Sylvia Marlowe collection documents her performance career, predominantly through scores, many inscribed to her by composers. Additionally, photographs and textual publicity materials provide further context for Marlowe's performances and recordings.

Harpsichordist Sylvia Marlowe (1908-1981) contributed to popularizing harpsichord music and promoting new works for the harpsichord in the twentieth century. The collection includes personal correspondence, photographs, clippings and programs, contracts and wills, analog audio reels of important albums Marlowe recorded, and a set of scores of classical pieces set in contemporary popular arrangements composed for Marlowe. The collection also contains correspondence and documents relating to the Harpsichord Music Society (founded by Marlowe) and Kenneth Cooper, its director.

New School professor and semiotician Marshall Blonsky moderated the series, The Culture Elite, during the Spring 1993 semester as part The New School's Art and Politics lecture program. Guests included talk show host Charlie Rose, French cultural ambassador Annie Cohen-Solal, art critic and cultural commentator Anthony Haden-Guest, journalist and novelist David Ignatius, sociologist Richard Sennett, and journalist and disability rights advocate John Hockenberry. The collection consists of audio recordings of all advertised guests.

In 1973, Eugene McCarthy, former United States senator and Democratic Party presidential candidate, delivered a series of lectures at The New School on the topic of "The Future of Liberalism in America." This collection consists of audio recordings of four lectures held at the university in February.
