Abstract Clara Woolie Mayer (1895-1988) held a long affiliation with the New School: as a student, as a trustee, and then in administrative roles, including dean of the School of Philosophy and Liberal Arts (1943-1961) and vice president of the New School for Social Research (1950-1961). Frank Alvah Parsons lectures on art and prints of period rooms

Summary

Frank Alvah Parsons (1866-1930) began as an instructor at the New York School of Art in 1904. He became director in 1911, renaming the school the New York School of Fine and Applied Art to reflect his reorientation of the institution toward practical design disciplines. The school was later renamed to honor his leadership. The collection consists of published editions of Parsons' lectures, and prints he used to illustrate them.

Summary

The New School Associates was the first fundraising body associated with the New School for Social Research. Composed of faculty, former students, school administrators and supporters of the school’s aims, the Associates sponsored numerous events and an annual membership drive. These records represent the administration of the Associates from the mid-1940s through the 1970s. Art exhibition records extend into the 1980s.

Abstract

The Parsons School of Design Master of Arts Design Studies program was established to encourage the study of design as a transdisciplinary discipline with the goal of preparing students to become active agents of social change. The collection consists of physical and electronic files documenting the program's development and planning, and reporting on its progress, as well as syllabi and video recordings of a 2014 symposium.

Abstract

This collection consists solely of audio recordings of Reiner Schürmann (1941-1993) lecturing on Kant, Nietzsche, and philosophical anthropology. Schürmann was a professor in the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research, and The New School Archives staff assumes that the lectures were made during Philosophy Department courses he taught in the late 1980s.

Seth Benardete lecture audio recordings

Abstract

This collection consists of audio files of lectures given by classics scholar and philosopher Seth Benardete in his classes at The New School and New York University. The lectures represent Benardete's courses on subjects such as the works of Plato and Aristotle, among others. Each course consists of a series of recordings covering the semester-long span of that course. The recordings were made by Benardete's students on cassette recorder.
