Scope Note: Persons who formulate concepts and supervise the execution of the visual appearance of a publication or performing arts production, including layout, illustrations, designs for art work and copy, etc. for visual communications media, such as magazines, books, newspapers, online publications, posters, packaging, television, film, theater, video games, and other visual media. Art directors are typically not in an executive position. For executives of a theater company or arts organization who choose the material staged in a season, the hiring of creative and production personnel, and other management tasks, use "artistic directors."
