Scope Note: Formerly distinguished as two different buildings, Alvin S. Johnson Building and Jacob M. Kaplan Building. The Alvin Johnson Building was named for the New School President and economics scholar in 1949, and describes the original Joseph Urban designed New School building at 66 West 12th Street, New York, NY. The Jacob M. Kaplan Building, an addition to the original 1930 building, opened and was dedicated in 1956, and is named for Jacob Merrill Kaplan (1891-1987), a longtime New School Board of Trustees chairperson, philanthropist, and executive. Unclear when names of buildings combined and "Hall" came into use.

Summary

Originally located in six renovated brownstones on West 21st Street in New York City, The New School for Social Research reopened in 1931 in a new building at 66 West Twelfth Street in Greenwich Village, designed by Joseph Urban (1872-1933). The collection consists of drawings of Urban's original building at 66 West Twelfth Street, drawings for the expanded campus in the 1950s, and plans of other renovations and expansions at the site.
