Scope Note: Large, landmarked auditorium on New School campus and a primary setting for public programs sponsored by the university. Located at the street level of 66 West 12th Street (Alvin Johnson Building), New York, NY. Designed by Joseph Urban. Originally named Bernhard Mayer Auditorium. Re-named John L. Tishman Auditorium in 1993, in honor of real estate developer, donor and university trustee John Louis Tishman (1926-2016). In 2014, the Tishman Auditorium name transferred to a newly constructed auditorium at 63 Fifth Avenue in The New School's University Center. Commonly shorted to "Tishman Auditorium."

Summary
Originally located in six renovated brownstones on West 21st Street in New York City, The New School for Social Research reopened in 1931 in a new building at 66 West Twelfth Street in Greenwich Village, designed by Joseph Urban (1872-1933). The collection consists of drawings of Urban's original building at 66 West Twelfth Street, drawings for the expanded campus in the 1950s, and plans of other renovations and expansions at the site.
