Scope and Contents
Moderator: Sherle Schwenninger, Senior Fellow, World Policy Institute. Invited panelists: Nancy Fraser, author of Redistribution or Recognition?; Michael Lind, author of Next American Nation; Jim Sleeper, author of Liberal Racism; and Alan Wolfe, author of Moral Freedom.
The tragic events of last September 11 have inspired a new upsurge of patriotism among conservatives and liberals alike. This causes, in turn, a new discomfort among those concerned that patriotism can provide a license for Ramboism abroad and a garrison state at home. To what extent have the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center transformed the politics of patriotism? Does the new patriotism reflect a shallow outpouring of injured national pride searching for revenge or a deeper turn away from the greed and "me-first"-ism of post-196os America and toward a national community of shared sacrifice? How enduring will this patriotism be in a nation as diverse as ours and in an era when globalization is redefining earlier notions of nationalism and citizenship? Presented by the Wolfson Center for National Affairs.
