Abstract
New York State Board of Mediation labor mediator Julius Manson welcomes the audience and introduces Anthony Scotto, Vice President and Member of the Executive Council, AFL-CIO and President of Local 1814, International Longshoreman's Association, who speaks at 5:27. The speech covers the problems of unemployment due to automation, the findings of the report on longshoring by the U.S. Department of Labor, current contract negotiations between the longshoreman's union and management, and the issue of compulsory arbitration. At 21:40, Scotto concludes the speech and invites questions, the topics of which include: differences between the eastern and western longshoreman's unions, the issue of automation and containerization of cargo, regional differences in pier rental and dock labor costs, the future of the labor movement, and elimination and/or re-purposing of cargo ports.
