Automation: How Much and How Fast?, 1965 March 3
Abstract
The audio begins with background conversation, until New York State Board of Mediation labor mediator Julius Manson commences the program at 2:04. Manson previews upcoming luncheons and introduces Charles Silberman, a member of the Fortune Magazine Board of Editors, who begins speaking at 6:34. Silberman argues that the rise in unemployment is not due to technological change and worker displacement, the rate of which remains consistent over time, and he cites only a slight acceleration of productivity. He posits that the demand for skilled workers versus a surplus of unskilled workers, higher educational attainment, and a lack of demand, coinciding with an economic shift away from wartime manufacturing at the end of the Korean War led to an increase in unemployment, and endorses tax cuts as a remedy. Manson open the floor to comments and questions at 38:13, the topics of which include: the inadequacy of economic productivity measurements and tax cuts versus government spending for stimulating growth. The recording ends abruptly thirteen minutes into the question and answer session.
