Recent Changes in Labor Law and Labor Relations, 1965 May 12
Abstract
New York State Board of Mediation labor mediator Julius Manson begins by identifying the two guest speakers for the luncheon, and introducing the first, Leonard Rovins, who begins speaking at 4:15. Rovins cites the 1964 Supreme Court decision in John Wiley & Sons v. Livingston and the 1965 decision in Textile Workers v. Darlington Manufacturing, as well as the current case of National Labor Relations Board v. General Electric, to argue that allowing unions the right to collective bargaining in the case of fundamental economic decisions of employers sets dangerous precedent. At 27:55 Manson introduces I. Philip Sipser, who begins speaking at 28:30. Sipser discusses the issues of job and unemployment security, and cites the 1957 Textile Workers v. Lincoln Mills Supreme Court decision regarding arbitration to argue that employers seeking to subcontract jobs must be subject to arbitration and collective bargaining with unions. Manson opens the floor to questions at 47:20, the topics of which include: the purview of management over pricing and production and the provisions of the 1935 Wagner Act.
