This audio recording is of the thirty-second commencement exercises of The New School. William Styron, Thomas Hart Benton, Bayard Rustin, and Daniel Patrick Moynihan received honorary degrees at the event. The recording begins with processional music, and the welcome remarks commence at 7:19. New School President John Everett calls on Dean Allen Austill to present the baccalaureate candidates, who begins at 8:26, and President Everett confers the degrees at 8:59. At 9:49, Dean Joseph Greenbaum presents the candidates for graduate degrees, followed by candidates for the doctorate in philosophy at 10:51. At 11:43, Greenbaum calls the doctoral recipients to the stage individually to receive their degrees. At 15:23 Everett introduces Chairman of the Board of Overseers of the New School for Social Research Orin Lehman, who presents the honorary degree candidates at 15:47. Daniel Patrick Moynihan delivers the commencement address at 27:20, speaking on the subject of racial quotas. At 58:27, President Everett delivers an address to the graduates and adjourns the commencement.
