The Raymond E. Fogelman Library was the main humanities, social sciences, and liberal arts library for the New School for Social Research (as of 2005, The New School) from its dedication in 1969 until 2014. The library was part of the New School for Social Research’s Graduate Faculty Center which was constructed on the site of Lane’s department store at 14th Street and Fifth Avenue and opened in 1969. The library had a 150,000 volume capacity and was made possible by a grant of $500,000 from Dr. Stella Sweeting Fogelman (born circa 1897 - died 2004) in honor of her deceased husband, Raymond E. Fogelman (born circa 1895 - died 1966) a businessman, philanthropist, and a member of the Council of Fellows of the New School for Social Research.

Dr. Stella Sweeting Fogelman was a former educator, principal of the Joan of Arc Junior High School in Manhattan, and a lecturer in the New School for Social Research’s Human Relations Workshops, and Raymond Fogelman founded three corporations in the textile industry. The couple had taken adult education courses at the New School as early as 1920, and later became members of the New School Associates, the fundraising body associated with the New School for Social Research which sponsored educational and social events, exhibitions, and an annual membership drive. The grant establishing the Fogelman Library was made three years after Raymond Fogelman’s death, during the 50th anniversary year of the New School for Social Research.

Fogelman Library was relocated from its location at 65 Fifth Avenue in 2009 to Arnhold Hall at 55 West 13th Street with the planned conversion of the Graduate Faculty Center into The New School University Center, which was completed in 2013. With the planned relocation of the Mannes School of Music from its 85th Street location to 55 West 13th Street to join the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music and the School of Drama in 2016, the Fogelman Library humanities and social sciences collection was moved to the Albert and Vera List Academic Center at 6 East 16th Street. In December 2014, the library at this location was officially opened and dedicated as the List Center Library, which replaced Fogelman Library as The New School’s library of the humanities and social sciences.
