Scope and Content of Collection

Collection consists of lookbooks and other printed promotional materials for English-language markets distributed through Issey Miyake, Inc.'s TriBeCa (New York) office. Includes lookbooks for Pleats Please and designer Makiko Minagawa's brand HaaT. Also included is a dictionary of textile-related terminology published by the manufacturer Dan River. The collection does not include materials for all Issey Miyake, Inc. brands.

Jess Hess and Simone Pasztorek in Graphic Design for Fashion (London: Laurence King Publishing, 2010, 145-147) define lookbooks as "visual documentation of a single season," consisting of many printed images bound into book form. Unlike most books or magazines intended for the widest possible circulation, fashion labels distribute lookbooks without charge to "a select group of press, stylists, buyers and photographers inside the fashion industry." Functionally, fashion labels produce lookbooks for marketing and publicity purposes. Other industries have adopted the lookbook format as a method of promoting products and services, and entrepreneurs outside of the fashion industry may use the term to describe their portfolios.
