Scope and Contents

The collection is a subset of Richard Rosenfeld's archive from his career as a Parsons School of Design professor of illustration. It contains drawings of women's and men’s fashion he selected for inclusion in The New School Archives, such as demonstration drawings by him, to illustrate the concepts he was teaching and to document different styles and media, and selected student works, mainly from the 2000s. Rosenfeld assessed these as exemplary representative samples of fashion illustration student work. The collection mainly consists of mixed media illustrations of ink, charcoal, marker, watercolor and gouache, collages, and computer renderings.

Student works are mostly organized by year, and by media, and some have annotations, such as “good brushwork” and “example of good croquis.” Other works demonstrate use of various media, or computer graphics. Most of the student work includes the name of the student. Rosenfeld’s own illustrations are signed “Rosenfeld.”

This collection does not contain Rosenfeld’s commercial illustration work, nor does it contain work from his earliest decades teaching at Parsons School of Design. Additionally, it does not include his figurative fine art drawings.

Biographical note

Richard Rosenthal taught fashion illustration at Parsons School of Design for over four decades after graduating from Parsons in 1967.

He initially taught a course titled, "Fashion Drawing," in 1971, offered by Parsons's recently launched Continuing Education division, then called, "Evening Classes." He taught fashion illustration and fashion layout in this division of Parsons through the early 1990s.

In 1978, Rosenfeld joined the faculty of the undergraduate department, "General Illustration and Fashion Illustration," under the leadership of Suzanne Cole. In 1985, Rosenthal moved to the Fashion Design Department when fashion illustration separated from general illustration, as the teaching of the discipline of fashion drawing shifted between departments. During the 1990s, he was listed in course catalogs as a faculty member in both the Fashion Design and the Illustration Departments. In 2004, Rosenthal became a full-time faculty member.

He retired from his faculty position in 2015, but continued teaching in other venues.

In addition to teaching, Rosenfeld was a prolific fashion illustrator whose work appeared in such publications as Women's Wear Daily and Glamour magazine.
