The New School Archives And Special Collections

Student work and a syllabus from two fashion design courses Patrick Michael Hughes taught at Parsons School of Design between 2007 and 2010. The courses, History, Culture, Society and Themes in Men's Fashion are repesented through notebooks, drawings, and papers. Additionally, the collection includes an independent study project based on the men's suit and a project created in a class taught by Hughes's colleague, Lisa SantaAndrea.

The New School was a frequent host of PEN American Center events, co-sponsored by the university's MFA in Creative Writing Program. This collection of mostly audio recordings documents PEN Forums, literary awards, World Voices Festival, and singular events over a roughly 15-year span.

This collection consists of music manuscripts created by composer Peter Pindar Stearns (1931-2016), who taught composition at The Mannes School of Music from 1957 to 1989. The manuscripts include both secular and religious works composed during the period from 1948 to 2013 and the collection also contains correspondence related to the publishing of Stearns's compositions and copies of the published works.

The New School was a frequent host of Poetry Society of America events, co-sponsored by the university's MFA in Creative Writing Program and the university division formerly known as Schools of Public Engagement that focused on continuing education and public programming. This collection of mostly audio recordings documents Poetry Society of America readings, festivals, and awards ceremonies over approximately a decade.

Political Concepts: A Critical Lexicon is an online journal of political theory based at The New School for Social Research, first published in 2012. The journal publishes short essays, from a range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences, that aim to critically define a political concept. Political Concepts is also responsible for the annual academic graduate student conference of the same name, which also began in 2012 and follows a similar format, accepting papers that aim to define political concepts. In 2018, a selected edited volume of articles from the journal was published under the same name, Political Concepts: A Critical Lexicon.

Fashion illustration by René Robert Bouché depicting American fashion designer Sophie Gimbel. The illustration appeared in the April 15, 1961 issue of American Vogue with the caption, "Sophie's sari tactics for short evenings." A framed reproduction of this illustration hung at the entrance to Parson School of Design's Adam and Sophie Gimbel Design Library on West 13th Street. The portrait was taken down upon the 2014 closure of Gimbel Library.

The collection consists of a copy of Prints in the Desert, 1950, a limited edition book of fifteen prints and poems created by a group of artists and edited by Adja Yunkers (1900-1983). Yunkers was a painter, printmaker and collagist who taught at the New School for Social Research, 1947-1956 and at Parsons School of Design, 1957-1958. The book includes prints by Yunkers.

The collection consists of a file compiled by Phyllis Rich Flood (later, Phyllis Feder), while working as a representative for Push Pin Studios, a graphic design and illustration group founded by Milton Glaser, Seymour Chwast, and Edward Sorel. The file documents the "First Annual Chopped Liver Sculpture Festival," dubbed "Man and Liver," a promotional event for the studio conceived by Flood. The file includes press releases, invitations, mailing lists, and an article about the exhibt, which was held at the Greengrass Media Art Gallery in New York City on October 13, 1976. The exhibit featured works carved out of three hundred pounds of chopped liver that had been donated by the Second Avenue Kosher Delicatessen and Restaurant. The file includes slides of seventeen of the sculptures featured in the exhibit.

The oral histories comprising this collection were conducted in 2010 in preparation for the exhibit, Radical Shifts: Reshaping the Interior at Parsons, 1955-1985, to record perspectives on the interior and environmental design departments at Parsons School of Design in the 1960s and 1970s. During this period, Parsons' interior design program adopted a more experimental program of study in the newly-created Environmental Design Department.

French painter, printmaker and textile designer Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) created the woodcut for "La Danse" in 1910. This print was made in the year of his death as part of an edition of 220.
