Scope and Contents The album title is inscribed on the front cover. Consists of black and white photographs with accompanying handwritten captions. Contains photographs of various people and places in Europe. Locations include: Rome, Venice, and Naples, Italy; Paris and Versailles, France; Monte Carlo; and Dubrovnik, Croatia. Venice photographs include depictions of Nazi propagandist and chancellor Joseph Goebbels participating in a gondola parade, labeled a "water fete" by Van Day Truex. Appraiser Stuart Lutz observes, "Some of the notables who appear in the photographs include Mrs. Herbert Haseltine (wife of a prominent French sculptor), various European royals, Violet Trefusis (author, socialite and noted lesbian partner of Vita Sackville-West), Elsa Schiaparelli (Italian fashion designer), Buddy and Brooke Marshall (later to be the philanthropist Brooke Astor) and Joseph Kennedy (father of President John Kennedy) in December 1939...These albums are illustrative of European high...

Scope and Contents

Album consists primarily of newspaper clippings about singer and actress Grace Moore, including her death. It also includes handwritten and typed working drafts of a speech, a recipe, and a few black and white photographs. Moore was one of Truex's clients in his role as interior designer, but she was also a friend. Album is not available digitally.

Title is inscribed on a piece of tape on the spine of the scrapbook, but it is not wholly accurate. In addition to photographs of Truex's Paris apartment in the 1930s, it also contains documentation in the form of photographs and reproductions of French tapestries, interiors, and furniture and photographs of Salon No. 9 at Place des Vosges, Paris as occupied by William M. Odom in the 1930s. Clippings documenting Truex's New York apartment and former Parsons instructor Urban Morgan's home in the 1950s are also present. Some pages contain undated magazine clippings in French as well as English.

According to annotations inscribed inside the scrapbook, Parsons faculty member Stanley Barrows purchased this scrapbook at a Parsons School of Design library book sale in 1967. It is unknown who compiled the contents and when, except prior to 1967. New School Archives staff do not know when Barrows annotated the scrapbook or for what purpose.
