Janet Mabon scrapbook

Abstract

Entitled, "My Memory Book of Musical Experiences," this scrapbook was kept by Janet Mabon (1904–1965), a voice student at the David Mannes Music School from 1923 to 1925. The scrapbook contains black and white photographs of Mabon, her friends, and her voice teacher, Giulio Silva; concert and recital programs; school progress reports; press clippings; and correspondence.

Julius Rudel papers

Abstract

Julius Rudel (1921-2014) was an opera and orchestra conductor who graduated from the Mannes School of Music in 1942. He served as music director for several organizations, most notably as director and principal conductor for New York City Opera from 1957 to 1979. The collection includes annotated conducting scores, notes, a scrapbook of news clippings, programs and playbills, correspondence, biographical material, and photographs.

Larry Freund interviews with Esther Hoffman

Abstract

This collection consists of transcripts of seventeen interviews with Esther Hoffman Wexler (1918-2014), conducted by her cousin, Lawrence Freund, between 2012 and 2014. Hoffman, a Canadian-born concert pianist and a longtime piano teacher at the Mannes College of Music (which became a division of The New School in 1989), discusses her life experiences and her career as a musician and as a teacher in New York City and Toronto.

Leopold Godowsky score collection

Abstract

Virtuoso pianist and composer Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938) was noted for piano compositions and arrangements of exceptional difficulty, especially his 53 Studies on Chopin’s Études. The collection includes manuscripts of his works, sketches, corrected print proofs, and published scores with annotations and inscriptions by Godowsky and others related to him.

Abstract

Leopold Mannes (1899-1964) was an American musician, educator, inventor, and son of the founders of the Mannes School of Music, David and Clara (Damrosch) Mannes. Leopold Mannes and Leopold Godowsky, Jr. invented Kodachrome color photography. Mannes became president of the Mannes School of Music in 1948. This collection contains music manuscripts of Mannes's compositions, including arrangements of pieces by other composers.

Marietta Gazzaniga musical excerpts scrapbook

Summary

A scrapbook of musical excerpts kept by opera singer Marietta Gazzaniga (1824-1884), who toured the United States and Cuba in the mid-nineteenth century. The Italian soprano compiled autographs, letters, and poems from major nineteenth century Italian composers and other music personalities, notably Giuseppe Verdi, into the bound volume, which spans almost forty years.

Menachem Zur (born 1942) is an Israeli composer who studied at Mannes College of Music (now, Mannes School of Music), and Columbia University. His compositions are influenced by modernism, post-tonal music, and set theory, as well as traditional Jewish music. The collection includes various chamber music scores by Zur, mostly in photocopy form, as well as a recording of several of his compositions.
