Scope and Contents

This small collection of nine illustrations and a self-published book was compiled by illustrator Jim Howard. It mainly consists of women’s fashion illustrations, with the exception of one men’s fashion illustration.

The illustrations are mixed media of charcoal, watercolor and marker. Most of the illustrations are signed “Jim Howard,” but none are dated. Based on the style of the clothing depicted, the illustrations were probably created in the 1970s and 1980s. Among the companies that commissioned the illustrations in this collection, only Paganne is identified on one of the drawings.

The self-published book is a collection of illustrations, published in 2011, titled Jim Howard: The Bonwit Teller Years. Bonwit Teller was an upscale department store founded in 1895 with a flagship location on Fifth Avenue and 56th Street In New York City that, after changing owners several times, closed its final store in 2000. The illustrations presented in the book are not reproductions of the original illustrations in the collection.
