Scope and Contents

How does a democratic citizenry assess scientific research and debate that affects public policy? How do we temper our excitement and fears about discoveries and inventions that affect our personal health, the environments in which we live, and our most basic values with respect to privacy, social betterment, security and peace, etc.? How can lay people understand and make decisions about ethical and practical implications of scientific work? Where can we go for accessible information? In this 50th anniversary of the seminal paper describing the role of DNA as universal encoder of life on earth, The New School has invited a group of scientists and critics to discuss these issues: Ronald Bayer, Columbia University, School of Public Health; Jane Brody, New York Times; and Katayoun Chamany, New School University. Presented by the Wolfson Center for National Affairs.
